Stellate Ganglion Block

How a Stellate Ganglion Block can help you.

For some people, trauma, anxiety, chronic stress, or chronic pain can leave the nervous system in a persistent state of heightened alertness. A Stellate Ganglion Block (SGB) is a minimally invasive procedure designed to help reduce overactivity within the sympathetic nervous system.

If you are looking for meaningful change, relief from persistent symptoms, and renewed hope, we invite you to schedule a consultation with our team.

Who Can Benefit from a Stellate Ganglion Block?

The SGB may be worth discussing if you are experiencing symptoms associated with an overactive fight-or-flight response. Many people who consider the SGB describe feeling constantly on edge, easily startled, unable to fully relax or sleep, or physically activated, even when they are in a safe environment.

The SGB may be considered by people experiencing concerns such as:

What is a Stellate Ganglion Block?

A stellate ganglion block (SGB) is a minimally invasive procedure that involves injecting a local anesthetic near the stellate ganglion, a group of sympathetic nerves located on each side of the neck. These nerves are part of the autonomic nervous system, which regulate automatic body functions such as heart rate, blood pressure, sweating, and the body’s fight-or-flight response.

The goal of the procedure is to interrupt sympathetic nerve signaling. For many patients, this can help ease physical symptoms associated with nervous system overactivation, creating greater opportunity for healing, more meaningful engagement in therapy, restorative rest, and improved daily functioning.

Potential Benefits of a Stellate Ganglion Block

Individual responses to the SGB vary, and the procedure does not guarantee symptom relief. For appropriately selected patients, potential benefits may include:

How Stellate Ganglion Blocks Work at Quest Ketamine Therapies

  1. Consultation and Clinical Review

Your first step is a complimentary phone consultation with our team. During this conversation, the Quest team will review your symptoms, medical history, current medications, previous treatments, and goals for care. This helps determine whether the SGB may be an appropriate option for you or whether another treatment approach may be a better fit.

  2.  Personalized Treatment Recommendation

If the SGB appears to be an appropriate option, your care team will explain the recommended approach, what to expect before, during, and after the procedure, potential risks and side effects, and any preparation instructions. You will have an opportunity to ask questions and discuss any concerns before moving forward.

  3. Performed by a Board-Certified Anesthesia Provider

The SGB is performed by our board-certified anesthesia provider. During the procedure, a local anesthetic is carefully injected near the stellate ganglion, a collection of nerves located on each side of the neck. Before the procedure, a small-gauge IV is placed, and light sedation is administered for comfort. Using ultrasound guidance, a 25-gauge needle is advanced to the target location, allowing for accurate needle placement and enhanced safety.

  4. Monitoring After Treatment

After the procedure, you will be monitored until you meet the discharge criteria. Before you leave, your care team will review your post-procedure instructions, answer any questions, and explain what symptoms or side effects to watch for. We recommend taking it easy and allowing yourself time to rest for the remainder of the day.

  5. Follow-Up and Ongoing Care

Follow-up communication allows us to assess your response to the SGB and determine the next steps in your treatment plan. For some patients, the SGB is one component of a comprehensive approach to care that may also include ketamine therapy, psychotherapy, medication management, integration support, or coordination with your existing healthcare providers.

If you are unsure whether you may be a candidate for the SGB, a complimentary phone consultation is the best place to begin. During your consultation, a Quest representative will answer your questions, learn more about your goals and concerns, and help guide you through the next steps in determining whether the SGB may be an appropriate option for you.
